A Great Stop Along Your Road Trip to the South:

If you haven’t thought of adding Birmingham to your travel list whilst visiting the U.S. perhaps this info will help change your mind.

Once called the ‘Steel Town of the South,’ an industrial centre for almost a century, the economy of Birmingham has since diversified into such areas as medical research and banking to help shape it into a modern day city whilst maintaining it’s friendly Southern feel.

Soul Music

Birmingham has a thriving music scene and has historical roots in blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, folk and gospel. On most nights of the week you can find a local live band playing the genre of your liking, with good local beer on tap and plenty of the southern-style comfort food.

This city played a huge part in the civil rights movement, so it is highly recommended to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum. It offers multimedia exhibitions of historical events from post world war one racial segregation, through some of the most important and strategic protests in the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. and all the way up to present-day racial progress.

Family Activities

Families can visit the nearby Galleria Mall in the suburb of Hoover, home to one of the largest shopping malls in the South. The Birmingham Museum of Art is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon, or you can visit the McWayne Science Center, or the 122 acre Birmingham Zoo.

For sports fans I would recommend catching a minor league baseball game at the recently built, state-of-the-art, Regions Field. Don’t forget to also visit Railroad Park next door, which was also only recently completed, transforming an old and neglected part of the city into 19 acres of green — helping to round out the image of modern Birmingham.

Although Birmingham is not traditionally considered to be a tourist town, it is certainly very tourist friendly. If you’re doing a road trip through the South, or taking a train from Atlanta or even New Orleans, it’s worth stopping over for a few nights and making this city a part of your US travel itinerary.
