How to apply for a Canada ETA

Are you flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport any time soon? Don’t forget to apply for your Canada ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), before you leave. Commencing today, the new  Canada ETA system begins its operation and is mandatory if you are not flying on a Canadian passport.

Everything you need to know about the Canada ETA:

If you travelling on an Australian, New Zealand or UK passport (among many other countries), you will need to apply for a Canada ETA.

The Canada ETA is not a visa or a visa waiver, although Australians who are visiting for the purpose of leisure travel for less than six months do not require a visa. Please note that your passport must have at least six months validity from the date that you return home to Australia.

The Canada ETA can be obtained here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start-int.asp , costs $7 CDN per person and is valid for 5 years from the date of issue or until your passport expires.

Due to privacy restrictions, applicants are required to be completed by the traveler only, expect in the case of children which must be completed by their accompanied parent or guardian.

Your Canada ETA is approved instantly and does not need to be printed out, so in case you forget, you can apply from your mobile phone or tablet whilst you are queuing at the airport for check in.

Pro Tip:

Are you thinking about planning a stopover in the USA? Qantas and Virgin Australia both offer connecting flights to many destinations across North America, including to all of the major cities in Canada.  If you prefer to fly with Air Canada and will be passing through Toronto, consider flying direct from the Toronto to New York with Porter Airlines offering flights departing daily from the Toronto CBD.  This will save you a 30 minute shuttle trip to to Pearson International Airport, and will allow you to relax the pace of your holiday.
