What do you need to know?
For Aussies who are travelling to the USA, this information should be very useful to you.
Firstly, you do not need a visa to travel to the United States of America, however you are required to complete a visa waiver form, a minimum of 48 hours before you leave Australia.
The link for the form can be found here:
The cost is USD $14 per person, and it is very important that you carefully follow the above link, and do not go to any other website, as there are many websites that are charging more than $14, and are not directly linked to the US department of Customs and Border Protection.
Your first point of entry will most likely be Los Angeles or possibly San Francisco, and even if you have a connecting flight onward to Las Vegas, New York or anywhere else in the USA and your bags have already been checked through, you will still need to collect your bag to clear customs, as in accordance with U.S. travel regulations.
The process is really quick and straightforward, as you will not need to go to another airline counter to check re-check your bags after you clear customs. Instead, you will be able to drop off your bags at the baggage carousal, and the airline will take care of the rest.
In regards to checked baggage, airlines are usually quite generous with their baggage allowance, providing you with two checked bags, at 23kg each, for all Transpacific flights. However, it is very important that you double-check to make sure that you have the same allowance for all internal flights within the U.S. as well.
Some discounted airfares internally within the U.S., for example with Delta only allow one checked bag , so double check first, and do not get stuck paying extra at the airport.
When in doubt, always check with your travel agent. Click here to speak with one of our travel specialists, who will be happy to assist.
