If you’re looking for a short getaway to Los Angeles, perhaps as part of a stopover for a larger trip to the USA and Canada, then why not try staying in downtown LA? You might be surprised at how much you end up enjoying it!
Although I have been to LA a few times before, each I come here, I always to experience some of the endless possibilities that it has to offer.
This time, instead of staying in the more upscale Beverley Hills/West Hollywood area, I decided to stay in a place in which many Australian tourists tend to ignore- downtown LA.
Now, before you sneer and stop reading this post, consider that downtown LA is fast becoming a trendy place to eat and stay, within the greater Los Angeles area. There are numerous 5 star dining options, as well as local trendy cafes- not to mention some of the greatest sporting facilities in the country, including Staples Center (home of the Lakers, Clippers and 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Kings), and of course Dodgers stadium, home of the Dodgers – and owned by the basketball legend Magic Johnson.
Although like any big American city, there are parts of it that are steeped in poverty, where you are confronted by issues such as homelessness and addiction, if you stick to the central business district, it actually has quite a ‘safe’ feeling to it, and is at least worth a visit.
For the architechure lover, the Historic downtown area has preserved some of the city’s relics from the old days of booming LA. Union Station is also worth a visit. There are many great places to stay, at a very reasonable price, and of course as an added bonus, if you are renting a car, it is a short 20 minute drive to Hollywood, and about a 30 minute drive to Santa Monica Beach.
Have you been to LA, or are planning to go there, soon?
We would love to hear from you!
